King Gordogan – a radio theater premiere

Come join us for this most enjoyable and Absurd theatrical event!

King Gordogan – a radio theater world premiere
by Trafika Europe at Penn State University
HUB-Robeson Center, room 233
Saturday April 15th, 2017, 5:30 pm

Ruthless King Gordogan rules his kingdom with an iron fist, and his leadership has created a cruel world, dominated by pain and uncertainty. The King is pitiless; he has a limitless bloodlust, and he enthusiastically murders anyone and everyone who stands in the way of his vaulting ambition, including his own son. The kingdom awaits a savior, an indestructible knight, who will surely slay King Gordogan and stop the madness. But will he come? And if he does, can he prevail? Gordogan and his subjects live in a kingdom of the Absurd designed by a surrealist. There are no saviors in this world. Each of the players, including Gordogan himself, is a helpless puppet, manipulated by the tyranny of their own existence.

Radovan Ivšić wrote “King Gordogan” in 1943, and it was first performed in exile in Paris. This play has now been translated into contemporary English from the original Croatian and adapted for radio for the first time, by Carla Stockton.

Please note that this is not a staged performance, rather a read-through by actors, with sound effects and live recording, for later presentation on Trafika Europe Radio.

This event is open to the public and free of charge.

Support for this event comes also from the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and School of Global Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Penn State University.
