Trafika Europe Quarterly Archive
Trafika Europe published its first issue in the fall of 2014. Since then, we have published 24 total issues over the past ten years. We published all issues until 2024 as online magazines. Since 2024, we have adapted our publishing methods to make the issue more directly available online on our website. We still publish a digital magazine version of the journal; however, the prices of the publishing software have forced us to charge for the digital version. You can still access the journal free, online on our website. If you’re interested in becoming a member or buying access to one of our digital publications, please check out our Patreon page.
Quarterlies from 2024-Present
Trafika Europe's First-Ever Literary Prizes Issue (Vol. 1, 2025)
This amazing issue features winners, runners-up, and bonus pieces from authors and translators across Europe. Prose and Verse each have five pieces selected. A special thanks to Joe Williams, Ági Bori, and Francesca Bell for their dedication to pick top pieces from such stellar literary submissions.
Meta Mystery (Vol. 2, 2025)
Whether considering literature or life, mystery surrounds us. So much unknown becomes quotidian, which means that despite the unknown, we go into each day knowing that many things will remain myster for some time—perhaps forever—while other mysteries come into the light. Dig into some more mystery in this issue of Trafika Europe.
Essential New Literature from Lesser-Known Languages of Europe (Volume 1, 2024)
This curated anthology is merely a sampling of the impressive contemporary literature appearing in languages that are only lesser-known to those outside of their communities. In the end, like all European literary works, they remain pieces of art and cultural productions that reveal something about Europe and the world in which we all inhabit. It is, thus, of major importance that these authors do not remain limited by the language in which they write. Their works speak to countless audiences who, by the chance of birth, cannot read the original languages.
Recrudescence (Volume 2, 2024)
Recrudescence may strike you as an odd term to choose for a literary journal. A quick search can provide you with the following definition: “the recurrence of an undesirable condition.” While this might add to your confusion, what I love about this term is the echo that it makes with its original meaning: “becoming raw again.” What emerges between this dynamic of “undesirability” and “rawness” is the feeling that anyone has when starting afresh. As exciting and thrilling as newness can be, it places you in a position of vulnerability that no one truly seeks to be in. Pushing beyond this unsettling moment is what helps us grow; however, while in the midst of that growth, we choose how to react, adapt, and move forward.
Gothic Revival (Volume 3, 2024)
Boiled down, Gothic literature explores fear, haunting, and the uncanny. These influences remain quite popular, particularly in horror films. For example, Frankenstein’s monster and Dracula remain popular costumes, references, films, and even novels to be read by horror fans. As the title of this issue perhaps makes obvious, we have recently seen a Gothic revival in European literature, perhaps reflecting a sentiment that expands beyond Europe about the times in which we are living. What impresses us so much about this echo from the past, however, is that it touches on the more profound purposes of the 18th- and 19th-century Gothic, which goes much further than surface-level horror.
Blast from the Past (Volume 4, 2024)
It’s incredible how quickly 2024 has come to a close! We are excited to share with you all the final issue of Trafika Europe for this year: Blast from the Past. It seems like we are constantly looking forward, particularly this time of the year when we are planning for a new calendar year. What we often, thus, neglect to do is look back. This issue gives us a sampling of works from the past that have re-entered our literary present in the forms of new editions, new/first translations, and figures from history hidden in the past. In addition to the pieces in our focus, we present three wonderful non-focus pieces to supplement the issu.
